Overview of an Early Childhood Assistant:

  • Early Childhood Assistants provide care for infants, preschoolers, and school age children.
  • They work under the guidance of an Early Childhood Educator, Class teacher or supervisor, in various settings: Day-care centres, Centres for exceptional children, early childhood centres, before and after school programs, babysitting childcare environments, Live-in or live-out nanny environment infant and toddler in home setting, Pre-school and Kindergarten.
  • Some of the duties of an ECA are to prepare snacks, arrange rooms or furniture for lunch and rest periods, assist with eating, dressing and toilet habits. Submit written observations on children to the ECA or supervisor. Maintain daycare equipment and assist with in housekeeping and cooking duties.

Salary and Job Outlook:

  • As an ECA in Ontario the average yearly income is $34, 992 or $19 per hour. Entry level Assistant earn an average of $34,125 per year or $17.75 per hour. While an experienced assistant in the field for some time may earn up to $64,086 per year or 33.40 per hour.
  • As an Early Childhood Assistant, you may choose to work full-time or part-time and the hours can vary.
  • The likelihood of landing a job in the Childcare Sector after graduation is great. There is currently a sector wide shortage. According to Toronto CTV News (Nov. 2023) “the YMCA Childcare Centre at the Dundas Street location closed its door January 2024, due to a shortage of staff.”

  • During the program students are placed in licensed daycare centres/early learning centres twice for at least two (2) weeks to gain hands on experience.

  • In addition, the program teaches effective communication skill with children, parents and colleagues, critical thinking skills, organization skill and decision-making skills.
  • Upon completion of the program students are awarded their credentials in the Early Childhood Assistant Program.

Entry Requirements:

  • Must have a Canadian or foreign Highschool credentials or be a mature student over the age of twenty-six.
  • Must pass the qualifying test.
  • Must be fully immunized.
  • Must have CPR and First Aid certificates.
